I. Our story

In 1867, a young man named Josiah Spiers took some children from his Sunday school to a special meeting and observed the American evangelist Payson Hammond. In Victorian England, children were passive observers in church ceremonies, but Hammond got them involved. That spark ignited Josiah’s vision for working with children and marked the beginning of the movement. Shortly afterward, a reading plan was created to help children read and learn from the Bible.

II. What we believe

God and mankind

We believe that the Lord our God is one: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He carries out His sovereign purposes—in creation, revelation, redemption, judgment, and the coming of His Kingdom—by calling a people to come out of the world and join with Him and with one another in love.

We acknowledge that although God created us in His own image, giving us dignity, value, and the ability to respond to Him, we are now part of a fallen humanity. We have sinned and fall short of His glory.

We believe that the Father has shown His holy love by giving Jesus Christ, His own Son, for us—when we, because of our sin and guilt, were subject to His wrath and condemnation. He has shown His grace by reconciling sinners to Himself when they put their trust in the Son of God.

We confess Jesus Christ as Lord and God: truly human, born of the Virgin Mary, a sinless Servant full of grace and truth. He is the only Mediator and Savior, who died on the cross in our place, representing us before God, redeeming us from the power, guilt, and punishment of sin. He triumphed over Satan and his forces, rose from the dead with a glorious body, ascended to be with the Father, and will one day return personally in glory and judgment to establish His Kingdom.

The Holy Spirit convicts the world of guilt in regard to sin, righteousness, and judgment. He makes Christ’s death effective for sinners, calling them to turn to Christ in repentance and directing their faith to the Lord Jesus. Through new birth, He makes believers share in the life of the risen Christ. The Spirit lives in all believers, illuminating their minds to understand the truth of Scripture, producing His fruit in their lives, giving them spiritual gifts, and empowering them to witness in the world.

The Scripture

We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are inspired by God, as their authors spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, they are completely trustworthy in all they affirm and are our ultimate authority in matters of faith and life.

The Church and its Mission

We recognize the Church as the body of Christ, held together and growing in Him—both as a global community spread throughout the world and as the local congregation where believers gather.
We acknowledge Christ’s commission to proclaim the Good News to all people, making disciples and teaching them to obey Him.
We also affirm Christ’s command to love our neighbors, which leads to service within the Church and in society, the pursuit of reconciliation for all—with God and with one another—proclaiming freedom from all forms of oppression, and extending Christ’s justice in an unjust world… until He returns again.

This statement was approved by the International Council of Scripture Union in Harare, Zimbabwe, in May 1985.
